There are several surgical procedures that are utilized to achieve this:

· Open Release Surgery: A local anesthetic is injected into the wrist and/or hand and a 2-3-inch incision is made in the palm and cuts the carpal ligament free from the underlying median nerve. This operation takes about 20-25 minutes.

· “Mini” Open Release Surgery: The mini-open release technique involves an incision that is about 1.5 inches long and can be performed in the doctor's office with only a local anesthetic. The operation takes only about 12 minutes.

· Endoscopic Release Surgery: The Endoscopic technique is less invasive and uses involves one or two .5” inch long incisions in the wrist and or palm, and one or two endoscope (pencil-thin) tubes are inserted. A tiny camera and a knife are inserted through these lighted tubes. While observing the carpal ligament on a television monitor, the surgeon cuts the ligament to free the compressed median nerve.

If an injury results in the development of scar tissue, then the gymnast has lost some of their flexibility that they cannot regain. One of the most common types of cancer in the U. S. is also among the most preventable.

It's skin cancer-and more than one million cases of it will be diagnosed this year. In fact, skin cancer rates in America outnumber breast, lung and colon cancer combined, according to the American Cancer Society. Yet doctors say that some simple steps, such as limiting your sun exposure and wearing the right sunscreen, can ultimately help prevent skin cancer.

So why are skin cancer rates on the rise? According to a Harris Interactive survey, 40 percent of adults don't wear sunscreen regularly. There's a common misconception about getting a tan: There's nothing healthy about a tan from any source, be it a tanning bed or lying on the beach. A tan is actually the skin's response to an injury.

"If you know the facts about sun damage, there is no excuse not to wear sunscreen everyday," says Dr. Darrell Rigel, a leading dermatologist. "It is important to wear sunscreen even if the sun isn't shining because 80% of the sun's UV rays pass right through the clouds." Rigel advises people to wear sunscreen daily and choose a sunscreen formulated with both a high SPF and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

A new breakthrough in sunscreen technology, called Helioplex, combines two FDA-approved sunscreens and delivers highly effective stabilized UVA and UVB protection to shield from both forms of UV damage.

"People don't realize that there is a difference between UVA and UVB rays," explains Rigel. Generally, UVB rays cause sunburn and are linked to skin cancer. In fact, Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, is solely a measure of UVB protection. UVA rays penetrate skin more deeply, causing wrinkling and other aspects of "photoaging." More importantly, UVA rays seem to increase UVB rays' cancer-causing effects and may trigger some skin cancers, including melanoma.

Oscar Pistorius won’t be hard to pick out if he’s able to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and line up for the 400 meters. After all, Pistorius has spent his whole life standing out from the crowd. If you’re watching, he’ll be the runner who, instead of fibulas and feet, will have two curved metal blades to support himself. Pistorius is a double-amputee who was born without fibulas.

Despite the disadvantages that he faced as a boy who was amputated from the knee down on both legs, Pistorius has always been focused on tackling new challenges. Pistorius competed in wrestling, rugby, water polo and tennis as a youth, and played water polo and tennis at a high enough level to be one of the best in his area. In January of 2004, Pistorius was hurt in a rugby match, and was introduced to running during his rehabilitation process. Instantly, he was hooked.

Since then, Pistorius has trained day and night to be able to compete not only against other Paralympic athletes, but able-bodied athletes as well. His Paralympics career got off to a very quick start. In the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece, Pistorius qualified for the final heat of the 200 meter race, even though he briefly fell during the preliminary race. When the final race arrived, Pistorius didn’t fall again - instead, he set a world record tie of 21.97 seconds, beating not only double amputees like himself, but also single amputee Americans Brian Frasure and Marlon Shirley.

Pistorius didn’t stop there. In 2005, he won the gold medal at the Paralympic World Cup for both the 100 and 200 meter races, even besting his previous 200 meter world record. He continued to dominate Paralympic events, winning three gold medals at the 2006 Paralympic Athletics World Championships for winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter events. Finally, in March of 2007, Pistorius set a disability sports record with a time of 46.56 in the 400 meter dash during the South African Senior Athletics Championships. He would set more records for the 100 and 200 meter races at the Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled later that same year.

What really turned heads, however, was Pistorius’ performances against his able-bodied counterparts. In 2005, Pistorius was able to win the 400 meter race in the South African Championships with a time of 47.34 seconds. He was also a participant at Rome’s Golden Gala, where he bested his previous 400 meter time with a run of 46.90 seconds, good enough for second place. At this point, Pistorius began to seriously entertain competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Unfortunately, the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) had other ideas. They ruled that according to their sponsored scientific study by a German man, that the conclusion had been reached that Pistorius’ carbon fiber blades (known as “Cheetah” blades) gave Pistorius an unfair advantage. This was certainly a first for Pistorius, being pointed at as the competitor who had the advantage!

However, Pistorius fought with all his might to have the decision overturned, just as he had fought all his life while competing in able-bodied sports competitions. Finally, his appeal to the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) was successful, as the CAS announced on May 16, 2008 that Pistorius would be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes after all. The CAS had held their own studies that showed that Pistorius’ carbon fiber blades did not provide a significant advantage over the other runners.

With that battle finally finished, Pistorius still faces an uphill battle to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. His best time is about a second away from the Olympic qualifying time for the 400 meter run, which is 45.55 seconds (45.95 seconds if no other South African meets the lower time). If Pistorius is unable to do so, he is still a possible choice for the South African relay team. No matter what happens, if we see Oscar Pistorius line up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, we’ll be witnessing history in the making.

If you think that just because you didn’t buy the top of the line CPU you’re not producing a lot of heat, well then think again. In the world of CPUs there are perfect units, than there are lower quality units coming off that production line. Due to the failure rate of circuitry runs at such high frequencies every CPU is tested, based on these tests not only do they approve CPUs they decide which speed grade they belong in. The slower your computer’s CPU the more likely it is that this was a lower quality CPU from the manufacturing process. For manufactures it’s a lot cheaper to under clock a defective CPU, then to throw it away.

Over the years I have worked on a countless number of machines, and seen some really electronically unhealthy computers. How do you think your mouth would look if you never brushed your teeth? Well that’s how your computer can start to look inside if you never remove the dust. The environment your computer is located greatly contributes to what ends up inside of your computer. These particles end up in all your fans, between your peripherals, and in the bottom of your case.

As dust particles build up in your machine you will find they are drawn to fans, where dust quickly builds up. Dust can contribute to reducing the airflow of affected fans, reducing the speed of fans, and potentially burning out fans. In the dusty environment I used to live in I would clean my case every 6 months.

The advantages of cleaning your CPU are:

-Cooler operational temperatures, resulting in longer product life spans.

-Lower risk of catching fire (Dust can be an extremely flammable substance).

-Less work and friction on your fan ball bearings.

-Having a happier computer, sometimes they crave a little love and attention.

Now there are several ways to clean a fan, and some are more foolhardy then others. I myself can be rather foolhardy when it comes to dealing with my computer. I use the vacuum approach, and I am very careful about it (it is a rather low powered vacuum). The most dangerous part of this approach is the potential to vacuum jumpers right off of the motherboard. I myself have never done this, but I have heard stories from people. I would not recommend this approach, but as I said before my machine builds up a lot of dust and fast, so I need an industrial solution.

Now the best and most commonly way of cleaning out your computer is the use of compressed air. Now you can either use compressed air in an aerosol can, or an air compressor. An air compressor is the better approach as it is a onetime cost. If you already have a compressor, I would recommend the attachment for blowing up basketballs (high air flow through a small hole). As for recommendations for compressed air I would recommend MG Chemicals Super Duster 134 (I use the industrial sized can), here is what the can’s label says:

Removes dust, lint and foreign particles. Ideal for preventative maintenance on electronic, electrical, optical equipment and mechanical devices, such as; cash registers, computers, keyboards, audio and video equipment and ATM’s. Contains no ozone depleting substances.

Regardless of which brand of compressed air you buy always make sure it mentions it is compatible with electronic equipment, and that it leaves no residue. The last thing you want is some aerosol can creating static electricity within you case. So once you have gotten a hold of your air source, take your computer outside and blow out the fans, and all around you case gently. If there is dust on the bottom of the case the safest option is to gently use a cloth to remove the particles. Remember this is your computer, and it deserves a little tender loving care.

There are a lot of people who assume that those who are rich got their wealth dishonestly, or, never had to work for it. Some see the rich as snobs who look down on the rest of the world. How rare it is to find someone who is actually glad that someone else has tremendous wealth! Most think that rich people don’t deserve to be rich and that it is wrong be rich. It’s just not fair for them to have all that money! There are some religious people who actually think that being rich is not right in the sight of God.

But what does the Bible say? It does not say that money is the root of all evil; it says that the love of money is the root of all evil. You can have a dollar and love it, and you can have a million dollars and not love a dime of it.

There are a number of great people mentioned in the Bible who were rich, very rich. Job was the greatest man in the East. He lost everything and God restored double back to him! God did that for Job – gave him double!

Abraham in the Bible is called the friend of God and the father of all them that believe and he was very rich in cattle, silver and gold. How about David? Solomon? The list goes on and on.

When Jesus died, it was Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man, who took care of the burial. He had the means to do what he did.

Now I know that there are some who would argue that those mentioned above were special people with special reasons as to why they had riches and that they were just the exception. But if that is true why is there promise after promise of prosperity in the Bible? And please don’t fall for that fatalistic idea that some are “just meant to prosper and others are not.” Again, if that were true why are there so many promises of prosperity all over the Bible? There is nothing in the Scriptures to even remotely suggest that God would have some to be rich, some to be poor, and the rest to be in the middle.

Not too long ago, “The Prayer of Jabez” was very popular. All the items that were associated with it were basically from I Chronicles 4:10. If you read that verse you’ll find that Jabez simply asked God to bless him, to enlarge his coast, to be with him, and, keep him from evil. And God granted him what he requested! God didn’t say what most people would have said, “Oh Jabez, you are getting greedy, just be satisfied with what you have!” No. God gave him what he requested!

Now I know that there are a lot of Scriptures related to this topic to consider, and that a few might at first glance appear to be in opposition to prosperity and wealth. But those few cannot be magnified above the numerous obvious verses that show God’s desire for His people to be successful and prosper. There is a verse that plainly states that God wishes above all things that we prosper and be in health!

Prosperity and wealth can be obtained honestly or dishonesty – ethically or unethically. But far too many are so quick to judge when they see someone with prosperity and wealth. It is really sad because there are a lot of wonderful successful Christians who are being unfairly judged and condemned because of the blessings they have received from God. They work hard, apply principles, expect God’s blessings, and receive abundantly. Prosperity is a blessing from God available to all.

So what does God think of rich people? Is God displeased with the wealthy? Does He want everyone to be poor? God desires above all things for all His children, to prosper and to be in health.

Every brand-new day offers an opportunity for us to make our life worth living. That’s twenty four hours a day which is equivalent to one thousand four hundred forty minutes or eighty six thousand four hundred seconds. All those numbers make for a single day. That’s more than enough to make wonderful things happen. Or otherwise.

Because as the world turns and the demands of our fast-paced lifestyle gears for even greater challenges, expectations become high and seem unreal that people find themselves in situations getting overwhelmed, anxious, stressed and depressed.

“In any given 1-year period, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 20.9 million American adults, suffer from a depressive illness.”№ According to the National Institute for Mental health, the economic cost for this disorder is high, but the cost in human suffering cannot be estimated.

Depression is a Serious Illness

Many people do not recognize depression. It’s not just a feeling of being “low” or “down” which people think will pass or disappear in a few days. It’s not something that you thought you have just made up in your mind. Depressed people cannot will themselves to get better.

When an intense feeling of sadness occurs, or discouragement, hopelessness, sometimes even despair that lasts for more than a week and stretches to months or even longer, that is depression. It is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. Oftentimes, it interferes with the way a normal individual functions such as eating, sleeping, self-esteem and point of view. It can cause pain and suffering not only to the people who have the disorder, but also to those who care about them. When depression becomes serious, it can destroy a person’s life and the lives of those around him, such as his family and loved ones. Yet, such suffering is needless and can be prevented.

Types of Depression

There are different forms of depression. Three of the most common types of depressive disorders are the following: Major depression is characterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime. Dysthymia is a less severe form of depression that is long-term, with chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keep one from functioning well or from feeling good. Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives. The third type of depression is bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, manifested by mood changes in cycle: severe highs (mania) and lows (depression). There are times that the mood swings are dramatic and radical, but in most cases they are gradual. An individual in the depressed cycle can have any or all of the symptoms of a depressive disorder. When in the manic cycle, the individual may be overactive, overtalkative, and have a great deal of energy that affects thinking, judgment, and social behavior. This may result in unwise business decisions, embarrassing situations or haphazard romantic sprees. If left untreated, mania may worsen to a psychotic state.

However, within these types there are variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence.

Treatment Options

However, some of those who are aware of their depression do not think that it can be treated. If people with depressive illness will only seek treatment, even those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped.

A depressive disorder is not like a passing blue mood which can be willed away. Symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years and appropriate treatment can help a great deal. There are now anti-depressant medications and psychosocial therapies such as cognitive/behavioral, "talk" or interpersonal sessions that ease the pain of depression.

Antidepressant medications can help people realize significant recovery from their depression. These drugs should not be construed as magic potion or happy pills but prescription-only drugs that are to be strictly taken under a medical supervision by a licensed doctor.

The best treatment option depends on the kind of depression a person is going through. It is also important to know its history, the person’s age and preference. For kids, psychological treatment is usually preferred while adults with severe depression would require antidepressants or a combination of therapy and medications.

Top 6 things not to do with angry customers

1. Don't make threats. Have you ever said this, "If you don't calm down, I'm not going to help you." Or, "If you continue to yell at me, I'm going to have no choice but to terminate this phone call." If you've ever made these, or similar, statements, I'd bet that your sole intent was to regain control of the conversation. But the problem is, your customer perceives this type of language as threatening and it does not make them back down and it does not create calm. Try a phrase like this instead: "I really want to help you, but your tone/language is making it really hard for me to do that." And then pause for 2-3 seconds to let your words resonate with the customer.

2. Don't argue. Trust me on this one - you can never win an argument with a customer. Certainly, you can prove your point and even have the last word, In a discussion on the futility of arguing with people, Dale Carnegie once said "you may be right, but as far as changing your customer's mind is concerned, you will probably be just as futile as if you were wrong." Your goal in complaint situations is to retain the customer, not to be right. If you win the argument, you may very well have lost the customer. Carnegie encourages us to carefully consider some hard questions before going to battle with customers: "Is my reaction one that will relieve the problem, or will it just relieve frustration? Will my reaction drive my customer further away? What price will I pay if I win (the argument)?" Carnegie advises, "The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it." By the way, customers will spread negative word-of-mouth advertising to 50 people if they get into argument with you!

3. Don't hang up on the customer. I realize I sound conservative on this one, but I stand firm. If you hang up on a customer who is already livid, do you think a "disconnect" helps the situation or hurts the situation? The customer still has the problem and most customers won't give up their fight because you chose to hit the flash button. Most will call back and guess what? They will be angrier than ever AND it will cost far more in time and money to resolve the issue. If you just can't handle the customer, offer to transfer to a supervisor or co-worker.

4. Don't make the customer feel helpless. I cringe every time I hear an employee say, "This is all I can do." When customers feel helpless, some will resort to whatever they feel it takes to get their needs met. This behavior may include yelling, demanding to speak to a supervisor, or starting a blog about your company. This simple phrase changes the entire tone of a tough situation: "Mr. Bryant, what I can do is?"

5. Don't raise your voice. When I want my five-year-old daughter to use her "inside voice", I don't yell, "Lauren, USE YOUR INSIDE VOICE!" I speak in my "inside voice" with the expectation that she will mirror the calm tone of my voice - and she does without any further prompting from me. We must use the same technique with demanding customers. Escalating your voice when dealing with an upset customer will not create calm. It will only incite your customer. Lowering your voice presents you as confident, in control, and credible. In many cases your angry customer will begin to calm down because he realizes his intimidation tactic (yelling) isn't working. Try making one of these statements in a low volume when dealing with an angry customer. "What can I do to help?" or "What can I do to fix this situation?"

6. Don't tell a customer she is wrong. You will be smart to never tell a customer s/he is wrong or mistaken. Telling a person they are wrong arouses opposition and will make the customer want to battle with you. (Ever tell your spouse they are wrong?) It's difficult, under even the most benign conditions to change people's minds. So why make it harder by starting out on the wrong foot? If you know your customer is wrong, it's better to start off saying, "I thought the contract read otherwise, but let's take a look."

The next time you find yourself the target of verbal abuse from an angry customer, keep in mind these six "don'ts" and you'll be well on your way to getting the angry customer to back down and regaining control of the conversation.

Buying into japanese and german exporters

With the euro down nearly 15% this year and at a two-year low against the U. S. dollar, the world’s largest exporting nation is worth a good look. So is another country that has thriving exports in spite of a stronger currency. We’re talking about Japan and Germany, respectively, the world’s second - and third-largest economies.

The top lines at leading German industrial companies are rolling in with impressive numbers for an almost zero-growth economy. Quarterly sales at Siemens rose 13%, the fastest since 2003. BMW’s sales rose by 11% in the third quarter, although high raw-material costs and pricing pressure resulted in weak net profits. A bright spot is Asia, where BMW expects to sell 150,000 cars per year by 2008.

Overall, German exports are up for the third-straight month and sales to countries outside of the European Union rose 18% annually from a year earlier. Clearly, the Germans are good at making stuff and selling it to the world, and the weaker euro is helping spur growth. Germany’s DAX stock index is taking notice and is up nearly 20% year-to-date.

Meanwhile, U. S. exports are up a paltry 2% since 2000. Although exports to China are up 35% during this same period, Americans are now buying seven times more from China than we are selling to them. A good reason why is that, according to research by Morgan Stanley's Stephen Roach, consumer spending represents 71% of America’s gross domestic product. The figure is 42% for China and 55% for Japan.

Speaking of Japan, the aftermath of the financial bubble has obscured the fact that it too, remains an exporting powerhouse, despite a currency that has risen more than 20% since 2002 and 13% this year alone. Just look at Japan’s current account surpluses over the past three years: $113 billion in 2002, $136 billion in 2003 and $172 billion in 2004. China is a major market, and despite political difficulties, bilateral trade between China and Japan now exceeds trade between Japan and America.

A majority of Japan’s exports are manufactured goods and components. Fifty percent of its exports to China in 2004 were electrical equipment and machinery, and its top exports to the world include autos, electronic components, optical instruments, imaging equipment and computer parts.

Much is made over China’s huge trade imbalance with America, which reached $126 billion in the first eight months of this year. No doubt a sizable share of Chinese exports to America are chock full of Japanese components. While some of these components were made in offshore facilities, many were made in Japan, which has been able to hold on to its industrial base better than America.

How do they do it? First, the Japanese are continually moving up the value-added curve and are careful to keep the R&D and manufacturing of sophisticated components close to home, while outsourcing the low-end to low-wage countries.

Secondly, even though China’s wages are about 5% of Japan’s, factory automation has lessened the importance of labor costs. For advanced high tech products, it accounts for only 10% to 15% of total costs. Having manufacturing closer to home also shortens new product lead times and increases cooperation between R&D and production teams leading to a crucial edge in staying ahead of its nimble competitors. Supply lines of 2,000 miles can be problematic.

Perhaps most important, there is the critical issue of protecting intellectual capital. Having research, development and production closer to headquarters better protects proprietary technologies.

Canon, Sharp, Hitachi, NEC and Toyota are all good plays on Japan’s manufacturing edge, while Sony will continue to lag until it boosts its R&D and catches up in product development.

The iShares MSCI Japan Index exchange-trade fund is an attractive option, since it has about 50% exposure to Japan’s manufacturing sector with an annual expense ratio of only 0.59%. Similarly in Germany, the iShares MSCI Germany Index is loaded with that country’s top exporters and would be an excellent proxy for overall German export growth.

Microsoft thought it was doing it’s customers a favor by adding a programming language to Microsoft Word. In terms of customer service, it was a great idea, because it would allow users to automate and program within their documents. For example, when a document opened, it could be programmed to ask the user for details that must be entered into each document, like insurance policy numbers or phone numbers.

Microsoft didn’t count on this programming language ever being used to turn Word documents into virus infectors, but that’s exactly what happened.

The first Macro Virus was called the Concept virus. It was designed in 1995 simply to show that it was possible to write a virus in Word’s Macro language. Once it was proven, though, the idea took off. By 2004, nearly 75% of all viruses were macro viruses.

When Word opens a document, it runs a normal series of macros. When the system is infected, these normal macros have been replaced, so that when any future documents are opened, their macros are infected as well. Every Word document this computer touches carries a copy of the virus, and will infect any other system that opens it.

Possibly the most famous macro virus to date was Melissa. Virus programmer David L. Smith named the code after a lap dancer he knew, and released it in late March, 1999. The virus sent a file called “List. doc” which it claimed were passwords to eighty adult websites. Anyone who opened the document would get their passwords and a free copy of the Melissa macro virus.

Melissa would then gather up the first fifty entries in the address book, and email itself to all of them. Melissa had infected so many systems that by March 26th, it was shutting down mail servers with all of the infected emails traveling across the ‘net.
